Written scopes and line-item estimates before any work begins.

Yes. Our EPA lead-safe certification LFC-281 means we follow federal RRP (Renovation, Repair, and Painting) rules for containment, cleanup, and disposal on any home built before 1978. Many Maple Plain homes fall into that era, and we are equipped to handle them properly.

Common Questions Before Hiring NorBrook in Maple Plain, MN

Lot Selection in Minnesota

How much does a full re-side cost in Maple Plain?

What warranty do I get?

What happens at the first appointment?

Do you work on homes with lead paint?

Do I need a permit for siding work?

Most full re-sides on a single-family home in Maple Plain take five to eight working days once materials arrive. Tear-off of old siding adds one to two days if the existing cladding is wood. Weather delays can push the schedule, and our project manager will communicate any changes the same day.

We provide a workmanship warranty on our labor, and the manufacturer's product warranty covers the material. Fiber cement products typically carry a 30-year non-prorated warranty, while vinyl varies by brand from 25 years to lifetime. We walk through warranty details at the estimate appointment so you know exactly what is covered.

Yes. The city of Maple Plain requires a building permit for a full re-side. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and handle the paperwork. You do not need to visit city hall.

One of our project managers visits your home, measures the exterior, inspects the existing siding condition, and discusses your material preferences. We take photos and notes, then deliver a written estimate within a few business days. There is no charge and no obligation.

How long does a siding project take?

For a standard rambler or split-level, our written estimates for vinyl typically fall between $8,000 and $13,000, and fiber cement runs $15,000 to $24,000. The exact number depends on wall area, trim details, and whether we need to address sheathing or moisture damage underneath. Your written estimate will confirm the price before any work begins.

Minnesota homeowners replacing windows and doors face a unique set of challenges: brutal cold, ice dams, and energy codes that are among the strictest in the country. Getting the job done right means more than picking a product off a showroom floor. It means understanding how materials, installation methods, and local building science all work together in a climate that regularly drops below zero.

Minnesota homeowners replacing a worn-out wood deck face a clear choice in 2026: composite decking handles the state's brutal climate swings better than pressure-treated lumber, lasts longer, and costs less to maintain over a 25-year span. That's the short answer. The longer answer involves picking the right product line, hiring a crew that understands frost footings and local permit requirements, and making sure the installation accounts for the 130-degree temperature range Minnesota throws at outdoor structures every year.

We're NorBrook Construction, and composite deck building is one of the projects we take on most often across the western Twin Cities metro and surrounding communities. What follows is what we tell homeowners who call us at the research stage: real product comparisons, honest cost ranges, and the construction details that separate a deck that holds up from one that doesn't.

Composite Decking in Minnesota: What NorBrook Construction Does for You

We install composite decking across Minnesota for homeowners who want a deck that performs through decades of freeze-thaw cycles without the annual sanding, staining, and board replacement that wood demands. NorBrook Construction holds Minnesota residential building contractor license BC80875, and we're based in Maple Plain. Our crews handle everything from tear-off of the old deck through footing excavation, framing, composite board installation, railing systems, and final inspection.

Most of our composite deck clients are homeowners in the western metro and Lake Minnetonka area, though we work throughout the broader Twin Cities region. We build new decks on new construction, replace rotting wood decks on existing homes, and add second-story walkouts where the grade allows it. Every job gets a dedicated project manager who provides daily or weekly updates, so you always know what's happening and what's next.

We work throughout the following communities. [CONFIRM final list]

As a family-owned contractor, we know these neighborhoods: the lake homes around Minnetonka and Orono, the newer developments in Corcoran and Medina, and the established streets of Wayzata and Excelsior. That local knowledge shapes how we plan a project, from lot conditions and municipal review to the material choices that hold up in this climate.

Composite Performance Through Freeze-Thaw Winters

Minnesota decks endure temperature swings from roughly -30°F in January to 100°F in July, and that 130-degree range makes material selection critical. Wood absorbs moisture, freezes, expands, and cracks. Composite boards with a protective polymer cap resist moisture infiltration at the surface, which is why capped composites have become the default recommendation for this climate.

Our crews pay close attention to gapping during installation. Composite boards expand and contract with temperature, and the gap spacing we set in a 40°F April install is different from what we'd set in July. We follow each manufacturer's expansion tables to the tenth of an inch, because a board that buckles in August or gaps too wide in January is a sign the installer didn't account for Minnesota's range.

Frost footing depth matters just as much as the decking material. Minnesota building code requires footings below the frost line, which sits at 42 inches in the Twin Cities and deeper in northern counties. We pour concrete footings to the required depth on every job, because a deck that heaves is a deck that fails, regardless of what's on top of the frame. The substructure is pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact, and we use stainless steel or coated fasteners throughout to prevent the corrosion that Minnesota's salt-heavy winters accelerate.

Trex and TimberTech Lines

We install both Trex and TimberTech product lines, and the choice between them usually comes down to budget, color preference, and how much the homeowner cares about the feel underfoot. Trex Transcend and TimberTech Advanced PVC (AZEK) are the two lines we install most often. Both carry 25-year fade and stain warranties, and both use a protective cap that keeps moisture out of the composite core.

Trex Transcend boards use a wood-plastic composite core with a polymer shell. They're lighter than AZEK, slightly less expensive per linear foot, and available in colors that mimic tropical hardwoods convincingly. TimberTech's AZEK line uses a full PVC core with no wood fiber at all, which means zero moisture absorption even at the cut ends. That matters in Minnesota because every cut end is a potential entry point for water that will freeze and cause micro-cracking over time.

When a client asks us which to pick, we talk through their specific exposure. A south-facing deck over a lake gets more UV and more wind-driven rain than a sheltered backyard deck in Wayzata. For high-exposure situations, we lean toward AZEK. For most suburban installations with reasonable drainage and partial shade, Trex Transcend performs well and saves the homeowner $2 to $4 per square foot on materials. Our project managers walk through these trade-offs during the estimate visit so the decision is grounded in your actual site conditions, not a brochure.

Why Homeowners Hire NorBrook Construction

We hold Minnesota residential building contractor license BC80875, which you can verify yourself through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry license lookup. That license means we're bonded, insured, and accountable to the state for the quality of our work.

For homes built before 1978, our EPA lead-safe certification (LFC-281) is required by federal law during any renovation that disturbs painted surfaces. Old deck ledger boards, fascia, and siding often contain lead paint, and we follow containment protocols to protect your family and our crew.

Safety on the job site isn't optional for us. Co-founder Seth Norling holds the OSHA 30 certification, and that training filters down to every crew member. Robb Norling and Charlie Brookins founded NorBrook alongside Seth, and the three of them built the company around a straightforward idea: treat clients as partners, communicate constantly, and build things right.

Every NorBrook project gets a dedicated project manager who serves as your single point of contact. You'll receive daily or weekly updates depending on the project phase, and you can always reach us directly at 763-237-5114.

Your Options Compared, and What We Recommend

Feature Trex Transcend (Capped Composite) TimberTech AZEK (Full PVC) Pressure-Treated Wood NorBrook Recommendation
Material Cost (per sq ft) $8-$12 $12-$16 $3-$5 Trex for most budgets; AZEK for high-exposure decks
Installed Cost (per sq ft) $28-$42 $35-$50 $18-$28 Composite saves money long-term vs. wood maintenance
Moisture Resistance High (capped surface) Very high (no wood fiber) Low without annual sealing AZEK near water; Trex elsewhere
Warranty 25-year fade/stain 25-year fade/stain None standard Both composite warranties outperform wood
Maintenance Soap and water Soap and water Annual stain/seal, board replacement Composite eliminates recurring costs
Freeze-Thaw Durability Strong with proper gapping Excellent Splits and checks within 3-5 years Either composite line beats wood in MN
Color Options 8+ colors 12+ colors/textures Natural or stained TimberTech offers more premium aesthetics

For most Minnesota homeowners, our default recommendation is Trex Transcend. It hits the right balance of durability, appearance, and cost. The material handles freeze-thaw cycles well, the color options work with most home exteriors, and the 25-year warranty provides real peace of mind. When a deck faces sustained sun exposure, sits near a lake, or the homeowner wants the most realistic wood grain texture available, we steer toward TimberTech AZEK and explain the price difference honestly.

The one thing we consistently advise against is pressure-treated wood for a primary deck surface in Minnesota. The maintenance burden over 15 to 20 years typically costs more than the upfront savings, and the boards simply don't hold up through repeated freeze-thaw cycles the way composites do.

Common Questions Before Hiring NorBrook in Minnesota

How much does a composite deck cost in Minnesota?

Most composite deck projects we build in the Twin Cities metro fall between $15,000 and $45,000, depending on size, material choice, railing style, and site conditions like grade changes or second-story access. A typical 300-square-foot deck with Trex Transcend and aluminum railings usually lands in the $25,000 to $35,000 range. Your written estimate from us confirms the exact number before any work begins.

How long does the build take?

A standard deck replacement takes our crews two to three weeks from demolition through final inspection. New construction decks on homes with walkout basements can take three to four weeks if footing work is extensive. Weather delays in spring are common in Minnesota, and we build that into the schedule.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Minnesota?

Yes. Most Minnesota cities require a building permit for any new deck or deck replacement, and the permit process includes a plan review and inspections at footing, framing, and final stages. We handle the permit application and coordinate all inspections as part of our scope.

What's your service area?

We're based in Maple Plain and work throughout the western Twin Cities metro, including Minnetonka, Wayzata, Plymouth, Orono, Medina, and surrounding communities. If you're within about 30 miles of Maple Plain, we can likely take your project.

What happens at the first appointment?

One of our project managers visits your home, measures the existing deck or the space where the new one will go, discusses your material and design preferences, and walks through access, drainage, and code requirements specific to your city. You'll receive a detailed written estimate within a few business days. There's no cost and no obligation for this visit.

Does composite decking get slippery in winter?

Capped composite boards have textured surfaces that provide better traction than smooth wood, but ice is ice. We recommend homeowners use calcium chloride-based ice melt (not rock salt) and keep the deck cleared of snow. Some clients add non-slip stair treads, which we can install as part of the build.

Every household is different, so we start with what you actually own and who counts on you, then build coverage around it.
